Angel Guidelines
“Angels” are dedicated volunteers who:
- Introduce square dancing to newcomers
- Help fill squares so that all dancers can participate
- Demonstrate how enjoyable square dancing can be
Classes and Opportunities
Our Wednesday classes at the Promenaders are designed for new dancers to learn square dancing.
Classes also give experienced dancers a chance to refine their skills and refresh their knowledge of the basics.
We encourage recent graduates to serve as Angels, since helping others is a great way to reinforce what you’ve learned.
However, being an Angel does not guarantee a spot in every square.
Angel Roles and Responsibilities
Angels are essential for filling odd numbers in squares. We often use a computer rotation program
to assign Angels where needed. You may be moved between squares or asked to sit out to make space for new dancers.
Angels should fill the Sides positions first, leaving the Heads positions for new dancers.
Remember: The Newer Dancer portion of Wednesday nights is focused on teaching new dancers.
They need the space, patience, and encouragement to learn. Please follow these guidelines to support their progress:
- Guide the New Dancer: Provide subtle help only when needed. Avoid pushing or pulling. If done well, only you and the dancer will know it happened.
- Stay Enthusiastic: Keep a positive, patient attitude throughout the class.
- Don’t Talk Over the Caller: A new dancer can’t listen to two voices at once. Wait until after the tip to answer questions or refer them to the Caller.
- Move Slowly: Match the pace of the learners as they are introduced to new movements.
- Wait for Instructions: Don’t perform a movement until it’s fully explained by the Caller.
- Avoid Fancy Moves: Stick to the basics. No gimmicks, bumps, or shortcuts. Let the Caller introduce twirls or advanced styling.
- Be Ready Quickly: Help squares form promptly when the music starts, encouraging new dancers to join right away.
- Arrive on Time & Stay Until the End: Be ready when class begins and plan to remain for the full session.
- Dance with Many Partners: When not using the computer rotation, dance with different people. Show new dancers that variety is part of the fun.
- Be Considerate While Sitting Out: Avoid loud conversations during instruction or reviews.
- Use Proper Hand Holds: Palm-to-palm only. Don’t grip tightly, hold thumbs, or clamp down.
- Remember Your Own Beginner Days: Someone was patient with you—now it’s your turn to pass that kindness on!
