Typically we start the newer dancer classes once a year. Usually in the Fall. Some years we will run an additional class in the spring.
Square dance classes are very inexpensive when compared to most other recreational activities. The cost is $8.00 dollars per session. One of the many benefits our newer dancer lessons is that we offer the 1st TWO weeks for free as long as you have not attended lessons within the last 3 years.
The first 2 weeks are FREE and then it's only $8 per lesson. We offer a great discount when you sign up for the full 12-week session—Remember, the first 2 weeks are FREE and then it's only $70.00 per person for the balance of the 10 lessons. Payment is due when you begin your lessons. After the first 12 sessions, weekly classes are $8.00 per person.
Now, we doubt you really have two left feet! Here’s a quick quiz to determine if you could be a square dancer:
(1) Can you count to 10?
(2) Do you know your left hand from your right?
(3) Can you tell the difference between a circle and a square?
(4) Do you like to have fun?
If you answered yes to all of these questions, you can absolutely become a great square dancer! Much of it is simply learning, practicing, and building on what you know. Start with our New Dancer (Beginner) Program and get ready to enjoy one of the most rewarding activities around!
Absolutely! Singles are always welcome, and we truly encourage you to attend. Over the years, countless square dance “couples” have met and even found lifelong partners through these events. There’s just something special about the kind of people square dancing brings together. Come be part of the fun!
Square Dancing is a great way to stay physically active. The movements provide light cardio exercise, improve balance and coordination, and help keep joints flexible. It’s an enjoyable way to get moving without the pressure of a workout routine. It also offers wonderful mental health benefits. Learning dance patterns sharpens memory and focus, while the music and laughter reduce stress and boost your mood. Add in the friendships and sense of community, and you’ve got an activity that supports both body and mind.
Yes, square dancing is a wonderful activity for empty nesters! It offers the perfect mix of fun, exercise, music, and friendship. Many people discover square dancing at this stage of life because it’s a chance to meet new people, stay active, and enjoy a welcoming community. It’s not only a great social outlet, but also a lighthearted way to keep the mind and body moving. Whether you come as a couple or on your own, you’ll quickly feel at home and part of the group.
Yes, children are welcome in our New Dancer Classes—and we love having families dance together! However, minimum age for membership is thirteen years of age. We recommend that every student (including children) be able to stay focused, listen carefully, and follow instructions. They should know right from left and understand basic terms like “circulate,” “pass,” “turn,” and “circle.”
Not at all! If you prefer to always dance together, just let the Club Caller know when you sign in, and you’ll be kept as partners.
For classes, attire is casual and comfortable. Since square dancing is a cardio activity, layers are a good idea. If you perspire a lot, please wear long sleeves so others won’t need to grab a sweaty arm during moves like the “Left Allemande.” We dance on a tile floor, so we suggest shoes that don’t grip too tightly.
For Themed Dances, attire varies. Today’s square dance attire may mean traditional outfits (full skirts, western shirts, etc.) or dressy casual. You can find more details in our Terminology page.
Life happens! First, find out what new calls you may have missed by checking the "Newer Dancer Classes & Calls List" shown under the "Classes" menu at the top of this page.
Next, look at the "More Resources" category for additional instructional tools such as Taminations and Online Video Lessons.
There you’ll find links to videos and graphics for the calls you missed.
Also, at the next class, the caller will review the previous week’s material before introducing new calls.
Everyone learns at their own pace. It’s recommended that you dance at least one year at Plus or until you feel comfortable—meaning you can dance smoothly without frequent mistakes and fully understand the definitions.
The Promenaders suggest that new dancers attend Plus Workshops after graduation and serve as Angels in the following year’s class. This reinforces your skills and builds confidence. Many dancers find the second year even more enjoyable—and many return to Angel year after year.
Don’t let anyone rush you into advancing. Only you will know when you’re ready. Some members happily stay at Plus level for many years. If in doubt, talk with the caller for guidance.
We’ll continue to add more questions and answers as folks ask them! If you have a question, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’d love to hear from you.
